Philoptochos General Meeting with Guest Speaker Brenda Myers-Powell

Philoptochos will hold a General Meeting on Tuesday, May 17th, at 7 pm. Brenda Myers-Powell, an American activist and advocate against human trafficking, will be the featured speaker. Brenda, a human trafficking survivor, is the co-founder and executive director of The Dreamcatcher Foundation, a nonprofit which aims to fight human trafficking in the Chicago area. Through mentoring, education, and empowerment, the foundation fosters confidence, courage, independence, and inner strength within young people in disadvantaged areas. Brenda has worked on every level to bring greater support and awareness for women who have been abused, even leading several research projects related to violence and the exploitation of women. She has been recognized with several honors, including the Chicago Coalition for Homeless Recognition Award, the Illinois Coalition for Victims of Sexual Assault Award, and the 2010 Chicago Foundation for Women Impact Award. In 2020, she served on the United States Advisory of Human Trafficking. Brenda has testified in front of the Illinois State Senate and has authored the book “Leaving Breezy Street,” Her work was the focus of the Sundance award-winning documentary “Dreamcatcher.” The Metropolis of Chicago Philoptochos endorses the Dreamcatcher Foundation.
